These kinds of fleeces are inexpensive (About $8 to $20, depending on the size). We bought ours (about 3 ft x 3 ft) from the cat section of PetsMart, but larger squares of the same material are available in the bedding/camping departments of Target and other stores. This material works much better than a blanket. The soft polyester seems absolutely magical for calming the animals and helping them to recover from shock.

Nowadays, when we find a bird in need of help, we pick him up with the fleece blanket, wrap him up right away, and then deposit him, all bundled up, into the box. From experience, we know that this works with pigeons, grackles, great egrets, and snowy egrets. For example, one grackle that we found last fall tossing around in shock near a highway access road, quickly went to sleep after being wrapped up in the stuff. A few hours later, when we opened the box to check if he was still alive, he was standing perfectly on his feet and looking at us as if to ask what all the fuss was about. By the next day, he was flying around, and soon after that he was released. One great egret that we had found head down, shoulders slumped, and near collapse, also went to sleep. He looked so far gone that we considered letting him be. He made no sound at all in the car on the way to Rogers. Imagine our surprise when he woke right up at Rogers and started to poke around the medicine cabinet.

A dust bowl for a pond? Earlier this evening, we discovered that the small rookery stream and pond were drier than we had seen them even during years of severe drought. In fact, there was not a drop of water in them. The pond had essentially turned into a dust bowl, and there were quite a few dead egrets in it.

Some of you might have noticed that, about a month ago, the corner of West Campus Drive and Butler road was partially cordoned off and covered with large metal plates because of some underground work involving pipes. We think the water from the rookery might have been detoured and drained away. We hope we are wrong about this.

A polite inquiry to Kirby Vahle about the pond and a request that it be refilled might help to sort this out. Hopefully, the pond simply needs to be refilled. Last year, Vahle kindly had the pond refilled when it was low.

The Gulf disaster. Many of the birds from the rookery will fly to the Gulf in the fall, hoping to spend their winter there, or to stop there on their migrations to winter homes in Central and South America. I am terrified for them, as I am sure many of you are. This is a good time to start thinking about how we might help them survive the trip.

Great-Egret Chicks Here and All Rookery Birds on Site!

For a while last month, the rookery looked sad and ragged. In addition to the naturally disappeared periphery, several cedar elms had collapsed from the last snow storm, old age, or other causes, exposing much of the place. It was as though the rooms of a large residence had lost many of their walls, allowing one to see through the ruins from one end to the other. The lack of foliage should have made for easy photos, but the great egrets were exceptionally nervous.

It took surprisingly little time for new shrubbery to regrow along the periphery and privacy to be restored. The great egrets settled into their nests almost immediately. So rapidly in fact, that although they arrived in Dallas a week later than usual this year, their nests are right on schedule. Last week we found several of them filled with bobbing, spiky-headed chicks. They looked to be already about two weeks old. At all hours of day and night, the place now resounds with Quak-quak! Quak-quak! Quak-quak! Quak-quak!

Large parties of ibises circle over the rookery, particularly in the afternoons. The anhingas are back too, gliding high overhead. Their silhouetted triangular tails are unmistakable.

One of us has discovered that large parties of great egrets leave the rookery at dawn. They number over five hundred -- far too many to issue from only this site. So it appears that individuals from other places are gathering at the rookery before going out together to feed at some body of water. Presumably near to the rookery as the egret flies? It would be interesting to discover where this is.

The cattle egrets, usually the last ones here, arrived this week. They are in gorgeous form, all golden on the head and chest. The little-blue herons are on site too.

The interpretive signs still look terrific. The new "no tresspassing" signs, on the other hand, seem much more fragile than the old ones. Several are already warped. It is unclear what caused this. Surely not the wind? One near the memorial garden is lying in the grass after being knocked off its post by a fallen hackberry branch.

Whenever anybody complains to me about our overabundance of rain this year, I tell them I am hoping for more cool and wet weather for the birds' sake. They deserve a break. So far, so good.

Lonesome Fred and the Party 'Round the Block

If you visit the rookery around lunch time, as you come around the basketball court, you will probably see Lonesome Fred. Fred is the last great egret juvenile of the season to fly. He graduated from “wading” in the grass earlier last week, to gliding 3 feet above ground last Friday, and lifting himself 20 feet up a tree today. He is not yet ready for sustained flight. Despite regular offerings of fish in the troughs, he is thin and ever famished. We watched him gulp 24 fish in one sitting today, wag his tailfeathers pleasurably, and immediately look around for more. My word, egrets eat a lot! Let us keep an eye on Fred and continue the feedings.

To our amazement, Fred is not a bit lonesome at night! Around 8 p.m., small parties of birds began gliding into the rookery from the southwest. As this developed, we strolled around the rookery to get a better sense of things. Adult little-blue herons, ibises, great egrets, and snowy egrets, together with their young, flew overhead and everywhere. They kept coming in until they numbered about 200.

We found Lonesome Fred looking ready to turn in for the night. He even yawned once or twice. He stood on a big hackberry well away from the party.

The seriously “happening place” was the corner nearest to the staff parking lot and entry into the wooded path. The birds were perched, not in their former nests, but well "outside” the rookery, high atop the oaks and cedar elms, over the grassy areas. There was much talk and pleasantry, and lots of hopping beween branches to mix with other parties.

This resurgence of visits from large numbers of egrets began last Friday. This is unprecedented and certainly temporary.

I recommend a dusk promenade by the rookery this week. The festive atmosphere will cheer you. The marvelous sight of the white birds against the darkening orange-lavender sky is terrible for photos and perfect for reflection.

Wandering Juveniles

As one disciplines oneself to observe the natural world, one learns that:

It is easy to see what comes and goes,

Difficult to see what is always around,

And harder still to see what is missing but should be there.

For example, since last year, the rookery’s nesting season became strangely abbreviated by nearly two months. Had I not had the sense to snap a few photos, we might have had no record of this. But here is one of the photos that was meant to be my own celebration of a successful finish to the 2007 season. I miss those dear little friends very much.

Already this year, on 20 August, the heron-and-egret season is drawing to a close. Fewer than 10% of the birds are still here. The adult ones leave the site early every morning with the juveniles who are strong enough to travel to White Rock Lake and other places where they can feed themselves. Contrary to all that I have read about herons and egrets abandoning their young, I see the consciencious parents return to the rookery at dusk. Once there, they put their young through some rather exhaustive exercise drills, probably after administering a daily feeding.

During the day, however, those juveniles who are not yet strong fliers, shuffle about the rookery feeding themselves as best as they can. This population numbers about 50 and is made up almost entirely of great egrets (white as juveniles but smaller than their parents), black-crowned night herons (brown-and-beige striped as juveniles), and white ibises (grey-backed as juveniles). The ibises are shier than in previous years and limit most of their wanderings to the early hours of the morning.

The rookery has little to offer these baby birds in the way of food, apart from a handful of crickets and earthworms. Our Society has greatly reduced the casualties among these young birds this year by providing them with regular feedings of minnows. It should be possible in future to eliminate those casualties altogether.

What you can do right now:

We need continued help with the feedings and with keeping the water troughs full of clean water.

In addition, please watch the remaining birds. When you see a bird, walk directly toward the bird and observe his response. A well bird should fly to a higher spot, because all the juveniles are now able to fly. Any bird who lets people get close is probably famished. Even if the bird walks away slowly, this is probably signaling some listlessness and an inability to fly. If the bird makes no effort at all to move away, the bird urgently needs help, no matter how beautiful he looks.

Other news:
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372316896935202962" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RH5qJy3n66U/So5NwQam0JI/AAAAAAAAAAY/Q8OdMSG4kK0/s320/egretandsign.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; Two interpretive rookery signs were installed yesterday by Physical Plant, thanks to Kirby Vahle. One is near the memorial garden, the other is across from the basketball court. The photo at left shows a sign being inspected for errors. The signs, apart from being beautiful, seem to have inspired a great deal of protectiveness. I was rather pleased to be pulled aside twice yesterday, as I tried to peek into the pond, and required to explain what I was doing.

I will write again soon with political news and our extensive plans for the “off-season”.

Shooting in or Near Rookery

Today we rescued a great egret quite different from our previous rescues:

He was not in the rookery but in the faculty parking garage around 11 a.m. (I had to stomp on brakes to dodge him.).

He was not an innocent docile juvenile, but a full grown adult Great Egret, in excellent health apart from his wound, and he was not one to suffer fools gladly.

There was blood all over his right side and wing. My first thought, since I narrowly avoided hitting him, was that another car had hit him. But closer examination showed that all the blood was streaming from a small round hole through his upper wing. This Egret had recently been SHOT with a BB gun. The pellet hit a vein, which accounted for the blood, but luckily it missed the wing bones. If the shot had been larger, or struck less than an inch higher, the bird would have been crippled. The egret is being treated to prevent infection but should easily recover.

Who would do such an awful thing? The folks at the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center believe the bird could have flown, painfully, even in his bruised condition, from a nearby residential area.

It seems unlikely that anyone is shooting at birds in the rookery. Nevertheless, we should look out for a maniac with a BB gun, probably a kid.

In other news:

We were in Madison (Wisconsin) last week and made a side trip to visit the International Crane Foundation (ICF).
There we learned that some cranes cool off on very hot days by riding the thermals up into the cooler upper air and circling as long as they can. This might explain why the Anhingas were circling high in the sky two weeks ago and dropping into odd places.

The anhingas might be gone for the year. I saw none in the sky today.

The ibises are probably not too far behind. Today I saw a small family overhead that included the first flying ibis juveniles I've seen this year.

The rookery looks no worse for our absence. Thanks to everyone who pitched in, especially Anna, Peter, and Valerie.

Raining Anhingas and Other News

Things are looking a bit better this week. Much thanks to those of you who have volunteered to do more!

WFAA News segment. The recent news segment was excellent. It was aired on Saturday evening instead of Friday.

New volunteers. The Heron and Egret Society has several new volunteers. Welcome Anna, Julie, Kris, Alex, Lesley, Jane, and Jennifer!

Our logo. Diane has agreed to design the logo for the Heron and Egret Society. She thinks this should be a shared vision and wants your suggestions.

State of the rookery: Here is what is happening now at the rookery and what we can do. The end of nesting season is near. If you go to the rookery now, you will notice dozens of great egrets walking around and through the woods. Though these birds look large, they are juveniles who are left to survive by their wits throughout the day. This is a dangerous time for them. This week we rescued an average of about two a day, all of them emaciated, and half of them with injuries. We think this is because:

There is little for these birds to eat. Gone are the days when a fast brook full of small fish, etc., flowed through the woods. Juveniles typically get stabbed in the head if they beg for food from other juveniles or from adults who are not their parents.

There is little for the birds to drink during these impossibly hot days, and they can quickly become dehydrated.

Juveniles who are inexpert at flying often get caught in tree branches and break their limbs.

Predators (hawks, raccoons, cats, etc.) who seem to know exactly what season this is are skulking around the place for meals.

Quite a few adult great egrets return to the rookery at dusk, and the total number of birds of this species is rapidly dropping. We think the adults lead small parties of juveniles away every day. In addition to monitoring the great egrets, we are watching the nests of several white ibises, little blue herons, and tricolor herons. Their young are still scrambling around in the nests and cannot yet fly. This is the time of year when a supply of clean water and minnows can be a lifeline to the rookery’s denizens (juveniles who are struggling, and parents who cannot leave their nests).

You can assist our efforts by:

Rescuing injured birds,

Delivering birds to Rogers Wildlife,

Helping to keep the water troughs full and clean,

Moving bird carcasses away from living birds (This should be done with a “grabber”. Do not touch any dead bird.),

Helping to deliver goldfish and minnows to Rogers Wildlife,

Doing volunteer work at Rogers Wildlife.

Let me know what you are willing to do. Better yet, go ahead and do it. If you need instruction, do not make an appointment. I am finding that this does not work. Phone me or Chalo when you are free to go to the rookery, and we’ll see whether someone can join you.

Fish deliveries. An example of success: today’s fish deliveries. Things seldom work as ideally as today’s fish feeds! Peter went to a live-bait depot near where he lives and picked up the fish: 1 lb of minnows for us, 6 lb of goldfish and minnows for Rogers Wildlife. Chalo and I delivered the minnows to the rookery and temporarily stored the rest. Egrets were standing by as we poured in the minnows. Anna picked up the 6-lb load from us and delivered it to Rogers Wildlife. Though we operated like clockwork, only about half of this was planned. The rest was improvised. I envision a time when all our work will go as smoothly as this, and I welcome suggestions for new ways to work that will minimize formalities.

The “Birdintrouble” posse. Chalo is setting up a bird-rescue communications system to coordinate our rescue efforts. He is testing it now.

The way this will work is that anyone finding a distressed bird will e-mail to:

Birdintrouble@Dallasegrets.org

This e-mail will be automatically forwarded to everyone who volunteers for the rescue team.

The person who decides to take the call will send another message to:

Birdintrouble@Dallasegrets.org

saying that he/she is "on the case", to prevent multiple volunteers from answering one call.

Yes, you guessed it. I am calling for volunteers for the BIT posse. Anyone willing to pick up an injured bird should volunteer their email address for this to Birdintrouble@Dallasegrets.org

The Anhinga situation. The situation with the Anhingas is probably signaling some quite worrying ecological collapse. This is worth monitoring. Last week, it was “raining Anhingas” over the campus. Thankfully, this has stopped. Over a period of about two weeks, we found:

1 Anhinga in basketball court (Weezer); he unfortunately died at Rogers after about a week.

1 across street from basketball court in parking lot. Died.

1 in closed tennis court with 20-foot high fence. Had to have flown in, but seemed unable to fly away. Good condition.

1 in closed courtyard near North Campus D building. Had to have flown in. Good condition.

1 on rooftop parking lot at St. Paul’s. Had to have flown. Good condition.

2 very young (less than two weeks old) Anhingas at one of the watering troughs (see picture above). Good condition, and very, very cute.

1 in parking lot behind building Y. Probably flew there. Delivered to us but died before we got back from dinner.

1 in faculty parking garage. Died before delivery to Rogers.

To our knowledge, there are fewer than 10 Anhingas nests in the rookery, so this is a significant fraction of the total number of birds of this species. In the past three years, we have never rescued an Anhinga and only seen one dead individual. Kathy Rogers tells us that in 20 years, her rehab center has seen only two!

Our web site. Please check http://www.dallasegrets.org from time to time. There are new pages for art and literature featuring Herons and Egrets. Please send us your favorites. So far we have Diane Stewart’s lovely egret paintings and a link to the Flickr Heron, Egret, and Crane group. We are looking for poems and essays. We want the site to be absolutely first rate and would appreciate advice from the artists among us.

Campaign to make the rookery a protected sanctuary. We are getting a bit of a runaround from the politicians. This is expected. Keep right on writing. Point out that the rookery is a treasure that should be protected for the State of Texas.

Living in Place

A cliche of science-fiction stories ever since H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds is the idea that hostile aliens would want to gorge themselves on humans. Wells was a brilliant storyteller and prescient social critic who keenly followed the developments of his age and beautifully wove them into his novels. Unfortunately he lived when biochemistry was in its infancy.

Modern writers of science fiction should know better. Aliens from other worlds could never consume humans, nor for that matter, any other earthlings. The scientific reason for this, of course, is that we can only consume what we can recycle: amino acids that will be incorporated into our proteins, nucleic acids that will become part of our DNA, vitamins that will assist the biochemical reactions needed for our bodies' functions, etc. Put more poetically, the act of eating is a communion with family. This brings me to the main point that I wish to make here: the notion that we exist independently of other living beings is an illusion. All that we breathe, eat, drink, and excrete, passes along its way, connecting us to all that exists, as so much water flowing over the pebbles in a river.

I am sorry to report that things recently turned for the worse at the rookery, and the birds are suffering unimaginably of the severe drought. About two thirds of the rookery’s denizens have already fled.

This Summer, we are rescuing the juveniles of Anhingas and Black-Crowned Night Herons: species who have rarely or never before needed our help. For the rescued Great Egrets, this past week the mortality shot up to about one in four. Initially, I was overjoyed to be able to see the rarer juveniles, but now I realize this to be very sad news. These are the early-arriving species who had the greatest chance of a successful season.

For the late-arriving species, such as the tricolor herons and little-blue herons, the majority of the nests have failed. Bird lovers and photographers who monitor the rookery tell me that many of the eggs did not hatch for these species. Some parents took the more pragmatic course: they calculated that they could not reasonably maintain themselves and their young, and they abandoned their active nests. Others stayed and died trying.

What is currently at stake is not the demise of the planet, as it has become so fashionable to say. This is as arrogant as imagining that when we sleep the world disappears. The planet will continue. On the other hand, our species might well become one of many index fossils, i.e. a precise marker for a geological era because its population exploded and then disappeared. What is under threat right now is the ecological ensemble to which we belong. Our lives depend on the continued well-being of this ensemble as surely as it depends on the continued beating of our hearts.

It is for our own sakes that we must learn to “live in place” and support those plants and animals that surround us.

Right now, we can help the birds remaining in the rookery by:

1. Increasing the frequencing of our trips and rescues. Based on past experience, in the next few weeks we will see the worst injuries of the year. Collect any distressed birds and deliver them to Rogers Wildlife ASAP. Contact "birdintrouble" if you need help with the rescue or delivery.

2. Making our work better known to others on the campus. As the juveniles begin to fly a little, they are wandering farther from home. We are already finding them in the tennis courts, the parking lots in the North campus, and various odd places. It is important that these wandering birds be discovered early.

3. Inspecting, cleaning, and refilling the water troughs. The juvenile birds definitely drink from the water troughs that our Society has placed for them around the woods. There is a white six-gallon container of water near the memorial garden that can be used to refill the nearby troughs. Bring gloves for handling the container and troughs. After emptying the container, refill it from the faucet by the faculty parking lot. If you cannot manage the refill, let us know that you have emptied the container, and we'll organize a refill.

In addition, for the long term, we can help the rookery by getting it officially recognized as a bird sanctuary. Details about this are at:

http://www.audubondallas.org/forum/showpost.php?p=4680&postcount=42

Additional suggestions are welcome.

Yes, our humble little Society is making a difference. If you doubt this, drive to the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and visit the birds we rescued this season. Some of them already wading about and feeding themselves.

Rescue Season Resumes

Lots of news.

1. It is rescue season again. Since the mercury shot up, about 8 birds have needed rescuing every week. All but one have been great-egret nestlings. Incredibly, some of those rescued last week looked to be only one or two-weeks old. They are probably the chicks of the less experienced adults -- maybe first-time nesters. All this bobbing and twig-bearing is terribly complicated....

The other baby bird we rescued is the first Anhinga chick we have ever had the pleasure to see in the flesh. The Anhingas are relatively rare denizens of the rookery. There are fewer than 10 pairs of adults, but this season, they can be spotted flying over the rookery almost all the time. They are the dark birds with the extended necks and V-shaped tails in flight.

So far, the mortality has been low for the rescued birds, probably because they are being delivered to Rogers Wildlife as soon as they are found. Some lovely people, not in our Society (including a Jessica) have been contributing to the rescues. If anyone knows them, please pass on our thanks and invite them to join our group. We still need for more people to join in on the rescues. Please make an effort to survey the rookery perimeter at least once a week. We especially need coverage during weekend days.

It is time again to keep the troughs full of clean water. In past years, they became meeting areas for the juvenile birds and really helped them.

2. This year's official bird count is in. Overall, the numbers are not entirely outside of the normal range of the year-to-year fluctuations, although they have dropped. The interventions of last February, before things went too far, might well have prevented a more dramatic decline. Better not to know.

3. We have a web site! And Chalo to thank for constructing it. It is a work in progress. Suggestions are welcome. The address is:

http://www.dallasegrets.org

There you will find instructions on bird rescuing, contact information for us, important links, and much more. The little bird in the hand is Norbert (Norder to some), a cattle egret rescued at 8 grams after a thunderstorm in June 2007. The hand is Chalo's.

4. The design for the interpretive rookery signs is complete! The signs are gorgeous, and what's more, they can be downloaded from our web site. The graphics were contributed by Anna Palmer, the descriptions by Betsy Baker, and the photos by Anna Palmer, Kaustubh Deshpande, and Daniel Lim. They deserve our thanks for volunteering this impressive and polished work. Thanks are also due to Kirby Vahle, the Physical Plant VP, who graciously agreed to pay for production of the final prints and to construct the displays.

5. The rookery is gathering considerable appreciation from outside. Check out the articles about the rookery in web-magazine series HERE.

White Ibis Explosion

I've been meaning to check in with you!

The rookery's population exploded since my last mail! Many hundreds of cattle egrets joined the earlier birds. They are the smaller white birds with blond head and chest feathers. The blond is temporary mating plumage. You'll see them rooting through the grass for crickets and other insects.

Over 100 white ibises are nesting here this year. They are the white birds with pink curved beaks, pink legs, and black feathers beneath the wing tips. They have been putting on spectacular sky shows, with plenty of rapid formation flying, about half an hour before sunset (between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m.) every day. The best spot to see this is from the tops of the faculty and staff parking buildings.

It is abundantly clear now, from the birds actively sitting on the nests, that those on the periphery of the rookery are getting plenty of use (regardless of the thickness of the droppings there). The birds are looking well, thanks to the cool weather and rains. No rescue yet.

As far as can be seen, the only thing the university did was to set up a low screen around the little pond. They made the screen more opaque since the initial installation, and the birds seem to enjoy the little bit of privacy.

Plenty of cats still wonder in and out of the woods, though I've never seen one attack a bird.

No shrubs were planted, but lots of poison ivy came up where the trees were cut! Poetic justice? Maybe. Incidentally, poison ivy seems to cause its blistering skin rashes only in humans. Birds eat the seeds, and goats and deer casually browse the leaves. Do be very careful.

Another unintended development from the tree cuttings: an unusually large number of birders are pouring in from all over Dallas, and even from neighboring towns like Denton and Grapevine, to observe the birds and grouse about the hatchet job of last February. I saw one woman actually in tears over this. All watched the TV reports or read the Aubudon thread.

The completion (in a few days, I expect) of the new interpretive signs for the rookery should be a good occasion to contact the university and ask what they've been doing to keep their promises.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Recommendations

So much news.

The great egrets have hatched! The chicks look about a week old. I have been so busy working in my office that I missed visiting them last week.

In mid-March, the ibises (about 25), anhingas (5), and an undetermined number of night herons and snowy egrets arrived. This year the birds are nesting nearer to the memorial garden and are huddling together, whereas in previous years they spread out their nests. Only a few cattle egrets have come, even though in recent years, they were the majority species.

Texas Parks and Wildlife made its formal recommendations to the university on 6 April, and the university immediately agreed to abide by all of them.

WFAA was on the case.
The recommendations included:

Putting a temporary screen around the pond;

Planting a specific set of shrubs in the denuded areas;

Refurbishing the signs around the rookery;

Consulting with TP&W before any further "trimming" operations;

Removing the feral cats who visit the rookery.

Our part of the job, i.e. the new designs for the signs, is coming along beautifully and is nearly finished. The new signs will feature gorgeous images of the birds and brief descriptions of their range, habits, etc. We are hoping that they will encourage the university, with its many resources, to outdo us.

So far, a screen has appeared around the pond, but it is a pathetically low and transparent one. No shrub has yet appeared.

We, Audubon, and WFAA are all watching and expecting a better job. The Audubon thread on this episode is very detailed, still very much alive, and regularly updated.

WFAA's Janet St. James, who has done a superb job so far, enthusiastically looks forward to updating her news stories.

The birds are doing their part, right on schedule. If you watch the great egrets carefully, you will see some individuals leaving the nests and others returning with small twigs. These twigs are actually ceremonial. The birds are no longer repairing the nests. They just consider it good form to offer a small gift to one's mate when relieving them from a round of parenting. Such grace! Do take some time from lunch to say hello and welcome.

Meeting with UTSW Physical Plant VP

Many thanks for attending last Thursday's meeting with Kirby Vahle, the VP for the UTSW Physical Plant. The minutes are posted at the Audubon Dallas thread.

If you can, please send special thanks to Anna and Betsy of Audubon Dallas (their contact info. is in the above forum). They took the notes at the meeting and spent a good bit of time assembling the minutes.

As you will see, we stuck to our agenda, which focused on proposals for actions to repair the recent damage to the rookery, prevent future damage, and assist the visiting birds. Vahle agreed to:

1. Replace current signs around the Rookery with ones using information about the birds. (HES and AudubonDallas will furnish brief descriptions of visiting species.)

2. Notify TP&W about any plans to cut/trim around the rookery in future.

3. Call Rogers Wildlife to report distressed birds.

4. Report this meeting to the UTSW President to see if he agrees to issue an apology to the campus (as requested by Peter).

Texas Parks and Wildlife is expected to make recommendations later this week about the rookery.

New Birds Arriving, Tomorrow's Meeting

Thank you for your communications.

First things first.

After a week of quiet, the birds are looking better. The great egrets are repairing their nests again, as several of you noted. The new arrivals, which had stopped since the disturbances, have picked up again and the number of great egrets has grown to about 300. The smaller birds too are beginning to arrive. I counted eleven little-blue herons yesterday.

The Audubon Dallas thread is gaining steam. Do check it.

Please make every effort to attend tomorrow's meeting. Here are some suggestions that came my way. Bob suggested that an agenda be sent to Vahle so we that we use our time well.
See below.

Item 1 of the agenda

In addition to introducing ourselves, Chalo suggests that we inquire about the experts who advise the university and how they are chosen.

He further suggests that we secure a promise that nothing will be done to the rookery in future without first alerting Audubon.

Item 2 of the agenda

Peter proposes that a water supply be guaranteed to the rookery. This of course assumes that the university would want to nurture the rookery. That is an excellent place from which to start.

Peter also suggests that a transparent "check-and balance system be set in place to protect the birds," such as a regular newsletter from Physical Plant.

Robert thinks that one outcome of the meeting should be "a public statement by the institution (UTSW, not the Physical Plant) of specifically how it plans to handle the rookery long term."

Item 3 of agenda

Several of you support the proposal that a screen be built around the area of the pond. Rogers Wildlife Rehab will advise on this.

Please plan to stick to the agenda and stay focused on the specific actions to be gained from this meeting.

P.S. Based on a conversation with Vahle on Monday afternoon, here is what you might expect (I am paraphrasing here.). He will be shocked by any suggestion that the rookery is being encouraged to crash or that Telfair would want any harm to come to the rookery. He will tell us that Telfair is no longer being consulted because he is retired, and that two individuals from Tyler are. He was unaware of our group. The physical plant was unaware of the presence of the egrets during the recent cuttings and stopped the cuttings as soon as they learned that there were egrets on site. There was nothing unusual about this particular cutting; it is only 1 to 2 trees deep. Based on many years' statistics, the rookery is thriving. (The hour will certainly be taken up with a recitation of the statistics if we allow this.) The egrets have not always been here and first started coming to this area in 1966 when an apartment complex about 1.4 miles away was destroyed. There is no need to alter university policy about the rookery, because a policy of keeping the rookery "undisturbed until deserted" has lasted through three UTSW presidents. To every suggestion of repairs, he will respond that this might harm the birds, and he will try to reassure us that the birds will not be in any way be adversely affected by the recent disturbances.

Message to be sent:

Dear ----------,

Thank you for helping us organize a meeting tomorrow about the rookery. Representatives of the Heron and Egret Society, Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and Audubon will be in attendance. About 12 individuals have already indicated that they will attend. The actual number might be higher, but probably not more than 25.

In the interest of time, we would like to have the following items to be placed high on the agenda?

(1) An introduction of ourselves and expertise.
(2) A determination of past and future university policy about the rookery.
(3) A discussion on the actions to be taken to repair the recent damage to the rookery and prevent further damage.

Upcoming Meeting with UTSW Physical Plant VP

Please note that there will be a meeting about the rookery this Thursday (12 March) from noon to 1:00 p.m., at the UTSW Physical Plant Building 2nd-Floor Conference Room (Room P2.100).

This meeting has been organized so that parties interested in the welfare of the rookery (including The Heron and Egret Society and Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation) may meet with Kirby Vahle, the UT Southwestern VP for the Physical Plant.

Please make every effort to attend.

It will be important to use this opportunity productively and not waste an hour
listening to lectures, excuses, etc.

It might be helpful to think of the egrets as the part of us that flies and
approach the meeting with the following aims, i.e. to:

Introduce ourselves and get recognized as a source of expertise about the
egrets and rookery right here on the campus.

Determine university policy about the rookery and what might be good or
lacking about it.

Make proposals on how to handle the recent damage and come to some agreement
with the Physical Plant on the actions to be taken.

Please send suggestions. For example, Audubon Dallas has stepped in with a report about the rookery.

The bad news

The expert who is advising the university is a retired biologist who wrote about "Nuisance Heronries in Texas" and how to "manage" them. Beware! In parlance about wildlife, "manage" usually means destroy.

If you don't have time to read this article, here is a snippet:

"Nuisance conditions — where removal of birds might be considered — are subject to federal permit requirements and procedures. The Texas Wildlife Damage Management Service (TWDMS) is the state agency that can assist the public with the proper procedures to apply for a federal permit. After the breeding season, when the birds have left the nesting area, the nests that remain are still under federal protection. To remove these nests, or to modify nesting habitat, you must first apply for a federal permit. If you believe that you may have a nuisance heronry, or would like to modify a site containing nests, contact TWDMS at (210) 472-5451."

So it appears that somebody screwed up by bringing in the chainsaws while there were birds nesting. Is destruction of the rookery in the planning stages? If so, you are doing a great service. An infuriated wildlife rehabilitator, and more recently, somebody from Audubon told me that this sort of chainsawing operation beneath sitting birds is done to drive the birds away with the clear message that their world will be chopped away from beneath them. Indeed, there are downed nests near the memorial garden, below where birds were actually sitting.

Interestingly, this expert is knowledgeable about Texas plants, as I am. One of his sites describes the great value of hackberries and red mulberries.

Most of the hackberries and all of the red mulberries of the rookery were savaged last week. The destruction was so systematic as to make one wonder whether they had been targeted for destruction. These are natives trees of small stature, tough as nails, and long lived. They provide great cover for birds, protection from erosion, and even food for the songbirds. Some of the trees destroyed were quite mature. See the attached photo and count the rings. Another photo shows the depth of the "perimeter" removal.

What the Society can do

Please keep on keepin' on. Our Society is awfully good, though we don't waste time on meetings and other nonsense. We do not have to leave the final word on the rookery to the university's expert. I expect that I am as knowledgeable about Texas birds and plants but infinitely more caring. I am also not retired. There are others in our group who are knowledgeable about ornithology and ecology. All of us in the Society have direct experience of this specific rookery and its birds. He does not; he is based quite far away. Your suggestions on the rookery matter more.

Please keep up the pressure in every way you can so that the recent damage is repaired. One approach is contact everybody you know who cares about wildlife and ask them to make their opinions on this known. Public disapproval is the major thing shielding the birds and their rookery.

Chainsaw Massacre Coming to Channel 8 TV

News of the rookery disturbances will appear at 5:00 p.m. on Channel 8. WFAA will be reporting live from the Rookery. St. James is a real pro and very dogged about this story. So far, we had only seen the damage from our car as we drove to and fro. Please take a walk there as soon as you can: tomorrow if possible. It is important that we all see this.

Many thanks to those of you who contacted Salazar and took other measures to ensure the birds' well being. Some of you are encouraged by Salazar's quick reply that he is "committed to the safety and success of the bird sanctuary". Others are quite skeptical. Our reactions and responses do not have to be the same. The important thing is that we have put on notice those directly responsible for the recent cuttings and prunings.

A Game Warden from TX Parks and Wildlife will be here next week to examine the damage.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

If you wandered by the rookery recently, you probably noticed that all the underbrush was cleared, and many trees cut down or pruned. All of this happened since this Monday, while over 150 birds were in place on their nests. Though it is certainly true that the weather is ideal for removing dying trees that the spring winds would probably knock down, it is actually illegal for a rookery to be disturbed while it is active. Last year, some trees and shrubbery were also pruned around the same time but only on the rookery's perimeter. This year, the pruning is more intrusive, the entire rookery is affected, and the birds appear to be quite upset by this.

It is time to let the UTSW grounds people know that we are disturbed by these recent activities, or at the least, that we are watching them. If you agree, please write a polite note stating your concerns to Mr. Orlando Salazar, the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor for the Physical Plant. I have spoken to Mr. Salazar in the past and found him to be receptive to comments about the rookery. For example, he has been very good about letting us set up water troughs around the rookery and leaving them alone. On the other hand, we cannot know what pressures are on him.

You might be surprised to learn this, but there are some who would like to see the rookery replaced by new facilities for people. The rookery was expected to kill itself many years ago, as many rookeries do, especially with a little nudge here and there. Instead, it has survived some quite damaging human disturbances, such as interference with a brook that ran through it, removal of numerous trees to construct tennis courts, etc. But I digress, and that was long ago.

We must not allow damage to happen on our watch. You might start your message to Mr. Salazar by thanking him for his help to (or noninterference with) the Heron and Egret Society and then go on to state your concern about the recent prunings and, if you wish to be firmer about this, about the fact that an illegal activity took place. He needs to hear from us now and then, and not just from those who wish the birds were gone and call him to complain about the smells.

GREAT EGRETS HAVE RETURNED!

Welcome back from the winter! I hope you are all well and happy.

The egrets began gliding into the rookery last Friday, right on schedule for Valentine's. About 150 birds are here: all great egrets. More coming all the time. The first arrivals get the best nests. They are fortunately those near the memorial garden, where one can sit and leisurely observe the most masterful curtsiers in their full mating plumage. Great show! This is also where, in about two months, the first hatchlings will be bobbing their spiky little white heads and kwak-kwaking.

Bad Year for Great Egrets

It has been three months since my last message and a summer unusually filled with travel. How the time goes!

Normally some egrets would still be scouring the grass for grasshoppers, and from past experience, we would have expected this to continue till mid-October. Not so this year, but the news are good.

Despite the impossibly hot summer and a much greater number of birds in the rookery, which included, in order of abundance, the cattle egrets, great egrets, little-blue herons, ibises, snowy egrets, and night herons, we rescued only about 60 distressed fledglings, compared to several hundreds in previous years. The large majority of the birds who needed our help this year were the great egrets, whereas in previous years these were the cattle egrets. Though there were about 10 times as many cattle egrets in the rookery as there were great egrets, we found only one cattle egret who needed rescuing. We did also rescue a couple of little-blue herons and one night heron. The rest were all great egrets.

Why this change? Normally, the great egrets arrive here first, around Valentine's Day. They were about a week early this year. In addition, they abbreviated their courtship and immediately set about mending their nests and laying their eggs. The cattle egrets and others would normally have come in April, when the great-egret chicks were about to hatch. Usually it is a quite festive atmosphere, almost as if the new arrivals come to celebrate the hatchlings. This year, though, the second crew of birds arrived about a month earlier than usual and just as urgently went about the business of nesting. By mid-August, i.e. about two months earlier than in previous years, all the birds and their juveniles were gone -- mostly south, some flying as far as Brazil and Argentina. We did suspect from their behavior that trouble might be coming to the Gulf.

While attending a wedding this weekend, we could not help but marvel at how much a bride's veil and train resemble a snowy egret's courtship plumage. True: being hopeless birders, we are unusually well disposed to notice how much our culture is influenced by the customs of other animals, and our language too, but this is rather fun.

Did you know, for example, that the word "congruence", i.e. to come together, to agree, has its root in "Grus", the genus name for many cranes, including the Sandhills (Grus canadensis). What is more congruent than a flight of cranes?

Bird Rescue and Human Health

So far this season, we have rescued about 20 great egrets, whereas in previous years, we only found about 2-5 who needed help. One of the main reasons for this increase is that, all around the areas surrounding Dallas, rookeries are being destroyed to make way for condos. To make matters worse, the UTSW rookery lost at least 5 large cedar elms to strong wind storms in the last year. Consequently, the birds are roosting nearer to each other and to the ground, and the crowding and greater proximity to predators are probably contributing to their injuries.

Today, we rescued the first two cattle-egret fledglings. There are about 10 times as many cattle egrets in the rookery as there are great egrets. So we expect the next few weeks to be busy ones. In summer 2006, we rescued about 200 birds: mostly cattle egrets. The number might well double this year if the heat and dryness continue.

Several of you have suggested that we should try to publicize the bird's lot in local papers so as to recruit others to help us. I have not done this because currently, on paper at least, our group numbers 15. With this many on board, if everybody were to give the birds even half an hour per week, the work per person should become trivial.

Also, success is what begets success.

During the last two weeks, we often made two trips a day to Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. We do this because we see the birds as neighbors in trouble and are convinced that our well being is linked to theirs. We do not expect everyone to share this view. Whatever reason moved you to help the birds, please remember it.

Currently, we need the following:

People who will collect a bird or two one day per week and bring them to us. As it happens, we are winding up making at least one trip per day to the rehabilitation center. So the price of gas is not an issue. We can administer first aid, feed the birds, and keep them warm until we are ready for an afternoon trip.

One or two volunteers who will make a tour of the rookery on Saturdays or Sundays.

In case some of you are concerned about infections, I would like, once and for all, to dispell the notion that the egrets are contagious. Despite our almost daily contact with the rookery, our six pet parrots at home are all bright and bossy. The only consistent problems we have seen with the egrets are:

Infections of the tongue and throat with small leech-like flukes; this is almost universal.

Broken limbs.

Stab wounds.

Occasional infections of wounds with the larvae of flies.

Mites in their feathers; we see this in about 1 in 10 birds.

Yes, the birds' droppings are unsanitary, but it goes without saying that one should avoid any animal's droppings. Do not enter the woods. Collect those fledglings who are in trouble: typically the birds who are either standing still or stumbling, on the perimeter of the rookery. The best way to do this is to pick up the birds with gloved hands (protects from mites) and place them directly into a box that is lined with paper towels. Contact 'birdintrouble", and we will do the rest.

Valentine's Day

As I have noted to some of you, the egrets are usually in the UTSW rookery by February 14th. A short while ago I counted 130 individuals, all great egrets.

They came early this year. They began arriving on the afternoon of Wednesday February 6th, shortly after the last major rains. One individual glided by around 4 p.m. A while later, Chalo noticed an egret, perhaps the same one, in an entirely independent sighting.

The next day, their numbers had grown to 20 around lunchtime and 34 by afternoon. We went to the memorial garden area to greet them and found them already displaying their mating feathers and curtsying gracefully to each other.

By Saturday (February 9th) there were 64 birds, and some pairs were already refurbishing their nests and bringing twigs to each other.

This is a wonderfully happy time for the egrets, who are at their most festive and beautiful. I highly recommend a visit to the memorial garden area.

When you do go to the rookery, would you please take along a paper or plastic bag and remove a bit of the trash (mostly pastic bags, and some cans and plastic bottles) scattered around the rookery perimeter? The picked-up trash can be thrown into one the garbage cans at the parking-garage entrances.

I have been meaning to organize a cleaning crew before the birds' arrival. I had also planned to write our news more frequently. Alas, too little time. Still, even without a formal cleaning party, if we share a common intent, we can make the junk vanish in no time.

People are not permitted to wander into the woods once the nesting birds are on site, but a clean-up of the perimeter is fine. Should a friendly interested party or police officer ask what you are doing, tell them that you are with the "Heron and Egret Society."

For those of you who are new to our group, welcome!

Now, I have come to expect to find birds in everything, but The Wordsworth Dictionary of Proverbs recently surprised even me with its wealth of bird lore. Here are some tidbits I discovered under "St. Valentine".

- On St. Valentine, all the birds of the air in couples do join.

- For this was on seynt Valentynes day, whan every foul cometh ther to chese his make. (1380)

- When you hear the birds call for their mates, ask if it be Saint Valentine, their coupling day. (1621)

- To-morrow is Saint Valentine's Day, when every bird chooses her mate. (1828)

Here's the kicker:

- "There is an old proverb that 'Birds of a feather upon St. Valentine's Day will meet altogether.'" (1673)

As indeed they should! I bet you've probably only heard the botched version.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Fourteen Birds in Trouble

Yesterday, Chalo and Valerie rescued 14 egrets who were desperately in need of help. The birds ranged in age from about two-weeks old to nearly adult size (probably more than 6-weeks old). About half of them, the larger ones, had broken limbs. Today we rescued 5 more.

Since the heat and pollution are not letting up, the presence of very young birds now can only mean that things are about to get worse before they get better.

We put out several troughs of water around the rookery, and the birds are using them. We saw one healthy bird actually sitting in the water, cooling off, yesterday afternoon. If the water in any of the troughs looks dirty, please replace it with clean water from the faucet by the side of the faculty parking lot. We will leave a bucket there for the Society's use.

Please, please, everyone, try to make a rescue trip around the rookery at least one day per week, no later than 4:00 p.m., and around lunchtime if possible.

Bring along gloves and a box lined with paper towels, and park your car (if you're in one) by the Memorial Garden. If you send an e-mail message before noon to "birdintrouble" to let us know your intentions, we can try to coordinate your trip with anyone else who has volunteered to do the rescues. They work better if pairs of people run them.

Also, if you find that you absolutely cannot deliver the birds to the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on a particular day, let us know at "birdintrouble", and we will figure out some way to get them to Hutchins at 4:00 p.m.

The campus police know about us and have not been quizzing us as much this year as in the past, but if they should stop you and ask what you are doing, tell them that you are with the Heron and Egret Society and that you are rescuing distressed birds and plan to take them to the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

They are generally satisfied knowing this.

In 2006, the last birds left in mid-September. One of them gave Diane a bit of a worry but turned up on top of a car and perfectly fine. I suspect these birds are beginning to watch out for us.... It is such joy to see them lift off!

On Tuesday, Claudia sighted a bird with a broken wing, but despite his handicap he was too slippery for her. There were several reports of cats skulking about the rookery. Since no one has yet seen a cat carrying a bird in his mouth or even staring at a bird, the evidence remains circumstancial and their activities a mystery.

On Monday, there were no rescues, probably because of Ruth's vigilence during the weekend, when she rescued one weak fledging, witnessed one death, and removed a number of carcasses from the grassy areas.

Claudia put up several posters in the parking garages alerting people how to handle finding a distressed bird. She has been diligently caring for the koi pond near the memorial but will be away until Monday. While she is gone, let us keep an eye of the water and make sure it stays clean.

Eveline, at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, gave me an entire set of wonderful photos of the egrets and the rookery area constructed for them at the Center. Everybody looks quite bright, happy, spiky-headed, and comical. I am keeping an album. Feel to stop by for some smiles.

Shall we try again for a noon meeting on Wednesday or Thursday? There was no response last time. As the birds prepare to leave and while they are away, there is much we can do to make their visit easier next year on them and ourselves. Also, this would be an excellent chance for us to get acquainted with each other.

Two of us could not attend the last meeting. They do not try to help the birds in any way because they feel it is impossible to know whether helping the birds in one instance might not cause greater suffering in another. For example, providing water to the birds might reduce dying from dehydration only to cause the birds to starve later from lack of food.

Interestingly, they have been supplying water to the rookery area. Though the university holds this position of non-interference, as private individuals and an organization independent of the university, it is perfectly within our rights to help the birds. Our work and that of the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center have been noted. There will be no interference with our efforts. Physical Plant will not remove the troughs of water that we have put out for the birds.

The rookery appears to be a source of sadness to some. It has more birds than it can support, they say, and the trees are dying because the volume of bird droppings is so great that the acidification of the soil is damaging to the trees.

Our idea of constructing a holding pen near the rookery elicited considerable talk about approval of structures by committees, bringing up the issue at meetings, etc. So much for just a few stakes in the ground and bit of fencing. Better not pursue this.

The Physical Plant's treatment of the grounds is actually quite careful. For the fireants, they broadcast a bait twice a year with a slow-acting insecticide. Otherwise, they don't broadcast insecticides or herbicides. They actually go to the trouble of doing spot treatments with herbicides, and they don't treat the grounds for grubs. They do broadcast fertilizers.

The hands off policy of Texas Parks and Wildlife is a necessary one. If the University cannot touch the rookery even to improve it, then there can be no excuse for putting up any more buildings, or constructing ball courts, culverts, etc. This is an entirely unambiguous policy. It is a good policy that protects the place as a sanctuary, and we must be careful to do nothing to change it. Unfortunately, this also means that:

(1) the damage already done cannot be undone,

(2) the university cannot help us.

As independent organizations, The Heron and Egret Society and the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center can help the birds. About the best the university can do is not interfere with us. They are already doing this. They are leaving the troughs alone.

The holding pen should probably never have been brought up. It is easy to guess what the answer will be, given current policy. We must make sure that everything we do is reasonable. It makes no sense to ask for permission. In fact, Texas Parks and Wildlife said exactly this (unoficially, of course).

The birds are suffering from a combination of things: the extreme heat, crowding due to the destruction in recent years of several nearby rookeries, insufficient rain to dilute away the droppings and maintain a reasonable soil pH, the previous destruction of a large part of this rookery and, along with this, the rerouting of streams and sources of water previously available to the birds.

Virtually all of this is the result of human interference. It is easier to destroy than to build. We should build however little we can and help out our neighbors.

For now, here is the way we are playing it. We will keep the university informed about what we are doing. I think the idea of this should always be, not to request permission, but to inform.

I would appreciate more input.

Rescue Schedule

I am pleased to welcome three new members of the Heron and Egret Society: Susan, Jessica, and Chris.

Though nearly everyone is complaining about rain these days, I, for one, am not, because the egrets are faring better this year. This is not to say that they do not need rescuing. Their problem this year is not lack of water but exposure to cold and assorted injuries. Therefore we must change what we do for the birds.

We are picking up an average of about 10 distressed chicks per week. They usually benefit from being placed on a heating pad ASAP. Some of the chicks have injuries that look as though they are being pecked by some of the adult birds as they wind up in the wrong nests.

We still need committments for touring the rookery and travel to Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (RWRC). Currently:

Claudia and Kelly are signed up for touring on Mondays.

Valery tours and delivers whenever she can but is committed to Tuesdays.

Chalo and I tour and deliver whenever we can but are committed to Wednesdays.

Heather tours and delivers during the weekend days.

We need more people, particularly for delivering the birds to RWRC. These deliveries are understandably difficult, since it sometimes takes over 30 min to get to Hutchins. However, the visit to RWRC is usually well worth the trip because of the wonderfully expressive birds and great work being done there.

We will be away from 6-16 July. Yes, we do hope that the rains and cool weather will continue to help out the birds. Please do all in your power to keep checking on them while we are gone. Feel free to contact each other to coordinate rookery tours and trips to RWRC.

Call For Help

The cattle-egret chicks just hatched, and there are thousands of them. They look suprisingly well, for now. We did find a tiny nestling yesterday who fell to the ground during the morning storm. Sadly, he survived only a few hours.

The great-egret fledgings are 4-5-weeks old. The younger ones cannot yet fly, and some are falling from the nests. About 7 died during the long weekend.

Since water is plentiful, we do not need to clean and refill any troughs this year. What we do need, however, is for people to commit to one tour of the rookery per week or one a trip to Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center per week. Please write to me and let me know your availability for:

Patrolling the rookery (day of the week, approximate time).

Making a delivery to Rogers (day of the week, approximate time).

If each one of us commits to a day for one or these tasks, the work load will be relatively light on all of us, and the birds will be helped. Feel free to coordinate with others in the group. I will get back to all of you with possible assignments.

Chicks are Here!

The great-egret chicks are here!

The memorial garden is a good site from which to see the parents feeding them. They are in the nests, from which they regularly pop up their very fuzzy little heads!

The smaller white birds with yellow beaks and blond chests and rumps flying around and walking in the grass are actually adult cattle egrets.

Still no work yet for us. Water is plentiful, and the egrets look well. I have jotted down some notes on developments at the rookery that I can now share with you.

The first egrets appeared this year on February 12th. I counted 12 great egrets on the canopy that day though there were none the previous day. A cold spell soon caused these few optimistic individuals to vanish. Did they return to the Gulf? I have no idea. It was wise to leave, though. Apart from the frigid weather, during the various storms the rookery lost quite a few trees.

The lasting bird returns really began on February 21. Sixteen birds appeared on that date. Their numbers about doubled the next day (30 birds) and the day after that (62 birds). By March 7th, I could count 120 great egrets on the canopy of the rookery. They have been mostly occupied with courting and nest building: much fluffing of feathers, bobbing, and transporting of twigs.

For several weeks, the population consisted entirely of the great egrets. Most of these birds are now incubating their eggs. Their chicks should hatch in about two weeks.

As one might expect, it takes all sorts. Some stragglers are not yet done courting. Others still can’t seem to get the hang of finding the right twigs for nest building.

By the way, even after their nests are built, the great-egret mates continue to bring gifts of twigs to each other, as part of their changing-of-the-guard ceremony. Great fun to watch!

It is usually at this time that the other species of birds begin to appear, in anticipation of recycling some of the nests “soon” to be vacated. I suspect they also come to celebrate the first hatchlings of the season. All is proceeding according to schedule.

I made my first sighting of a different rookery bird on the Saturday before last (March 24th): a little-blue heron flying overhead. Since then, it has been one group after another.

Last Friday (March 30th), about a dozen night herons flew by around dusk, heading, no doubt, toward their evening meal.

During a walk by the rookery today, I sighted several snowy egrets.

Small parties of cattle egrets have been passing all afternoon.

One of the more pleasant sightings of the day was a large flock of ibises (about 50 birds), just playing and swirling around in unison. They are the most gregarious of the lot, and they seem to relish flying together.

To summarize.

Within the last few days, the bird population more than quadrupled. Still, the birds seem happy, and our rescue services are not yet needed. The Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center can, of course, always use help, and there is much that we can learn from them about bird anatomy and rehabilitation. I know that some of you are already volunteering there. I recommend that as many of us as possible do the same. Of course, I also hope the rains will keep up, and 2007 will turn out to be a kinder year for egrets.

By the way, we have found some of the most experienced great-egret parents to be the ones nesting within sight of the Memorial Garden. The first hatchlings usually appear in their nests. If you notice any fuzzy little white heads bobbing in those nests (or anywhere else in the rookery, for that matter) please be sure to send me the news.

Valentines

About 12 birds arrived today! Some folks are missing from them. How did you manage to duck the paparazzi, Claudia?

A couple of clean plastic bowls are still waiting around for anyone who wishes to claim them; one is clear with an orange cover, the other is blue-gray with a clear cover.

I have assembled a pamphlet describing the birds who usually nest in the UTSW rookery. The descriptions come from an assortment of places and were the most informative and interesting ones I could find. They are attributed to their original authors, but I have edited them for consistency, clarity, and brevity. The bird photos come from various web sites, especially

http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/chf/pub/ifwis/birds/

The birds we rescued in August and early September were mostly cattle egrets. The others tend to leave earlier in the season.

I will be in touch again soon about plans for the 2007 rookery season.

Please write with suggestions on how to make next year better for the rookery.

Please also consider volunteering (even an hour a week) at the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. This should greatly improve our first-aid skills. Kathy says that their current clients are mostly migrating birds injured by gunshots, fences, electrical wires, etc. Hopefully, others down South are looking after the little guys we just sent off.

Map to Egret Send-Off Party

Thank you for your replies to the RSVP about the party tomorrow evening. One employee asked if I was a teacher. What a question!

Last Thursday, we went to Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to invite the crew there to the party. After securing a promise that there would be plenty of drink to allay embarassment, they began to imagine their costumes, looked at each other, and burst out laughing. Our friend Bill now suggests a costume competition. So there may prizes involved....

Several of you asked what you might bring with you. Deserts, salads, or beers should be good. We've been having so much fun tasting wines in Texas wineries that we might make this a Texan affair when it comes to wine.

The egrets in the "rookery" at the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center are looking well. Kathy thinks that, except for about three who are still convalescing, they will all manage this Fall migration. She is gearing up to refurbish their current space as a permanent heron and egret exhibit, with waterfall, etc.

The attachments are photos of the last stragglers around dusk the Friday before last. They were on the slope by the faculty parking lot, grooming and waiting. Too bad we did not have a long lens handy.

I look forward to seeing you all next Thursday evening.

Goodbye! We probably indirectly saved twice as many by making available a continuous supply of clean water from late July until this week. No need to dwell on the sad parts. We've all known our heartbreaks this Summer. Better to consider how much of this we can prevent next year, with our Society watching the birds as soon as they set their pretty toes into the rookery.

I would like to invite everyone to a celebratory garden party on Thursday October 5, from 6:00 to about 10:00 p.m. A friend who throws gorgeous parties all the time and has got party throwing down to a science has offered to help organize the party. So this should be goooood.

Please RSVP whether or not you will come to the party. If you are bringing a guest, just let me know so we can plan for enough food and drink to satisfy and loosen up everyone.

One catch: this will be a bird-theme costume party (Chalo's suggestion). Nothing fancy needed: maybe tights the color of your favorite egret or heron's legs, or perhaps a Mardi Gras mask with a colorful feather sticking out of it. The site below, for example, gives simple instructions on how to make such a mask.

http://www.makingfriends.com/mardi_mask.htm

If you prefer to dress as a bird from beak to toes, that would be fabulous. If you simply cannot bring yourself to wear silly clothes, come the party anyway. A finer group of folks to share an evening would be hard to find.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://newsofrookery.blogspot.com/2006/09/goodbye-season-officially-over.html' title='Goodbye! Turns out I was mistaken about just three remaining. There is another one who occasionally joins the tighter group of three. All were shuffling about and tilting their heads horizontally from time to time, as though waiting for a travel party to come along. Finally, they flew over the basketball court and away. For all we know, that was goodbye for this year.

I have noticed throughout the season that the largest drops in bird numbers come with the occasional rains. Perhaps cool and wet weather is ideal for travel if one is a bird. In any case, we'll patrol the rookery perimeter again around dusk today and would be grateful if any of you would to the same for the next two days or so. If we sight no more egrets, a celebration is in order.

Last Three Egrets

Time to say goodbye to our feathered neighbors for the year and pat ourselves on the back a little for helping them through this horrid summer.

Just before dusk yesterday (at around 7:30 p.m.), I counted seven cattle egrets around the Memorial Garden. Today at about the same time there were just three, just outside building Y, looking relaxed, alert, healthy, clean, and air worthy.

If you can make time to stroll around the rookery before the weekend, you might catch them to wish them a safe trip. They tend to graze about in the morning and evenings.

I will wait until the last individual leaves before calling for a celebration.

By the way, Brazil was full of egrets: gracing the backs of $5 bills, walking with cows on the farms, and wading in shallow lakes. Amazing what one sees when one is prepared for it!

Cattle Egrets Still Here and Hurting

I wish I could write that we can relax now because the birds are happily flying South.

Sadly, over a hundred cattle egrets are still here, and the mortality is higher than ever. So please, keep up vigilence. Keep refilling the water troughs for a while longer, removing the dead bodies (using picker-uppers) from the watering areas, and making the trips to Rogers.

This week the Society rescued two to three egrets a day and lost about one every other day, on average. The ones who are struggling appear to be those who have trouble feeding themselves. We saw a few broken wings and several severe cases of flukes in the mouths of the birds.

The birds are subsisting on what little insects they can pull out of the grass. These are mostly juveniles who can fly a little but are not yet strong enough for a long-distance trek. They are leaving as they get stronger, because their numbers seem to be dropping every day. So for the cattle egrets this year, the departure from the rookery is looking more like a gradual dwindling rather than the anticipated sudden migration.

We are also finding other bird species in trouble. For example, Valerie rescued a helpless baby dove earlier in the week.

At the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, things are looking better, and the season seems to be winding down. Some of the more adult egrets inadvertantly got out of the rookery area, but they joined the passing migrations, and all is well. The smaller ones stayed and are improving every day.

Kathy found a source of free minnows for the Center. She thinks we might get a special deal if we approach the same supplier in Rockwall and mention that we are helping birds at a rookery. This would be a great help, because the birds will eat small fish, even if dead, but they ignored the bits of beef that Ruth lovingly sliced up for them. Would anyone be willing to contact this supplier?

I am accumulating a treasury of beautiful egret images that should put us in excellent shape for a calendar, greetings cards, T-shirts, and other items for fundraising.

Diane, an artist who paints lovely canvases of egrets and herons likes the idea of becoming our Society's official artist. She sent me several photos of her paintings.

Eveline sent us a CD of egret pictures taken at Rogers. Ruth has been photographing the birds here and at Rogers. I have shot a few photos of my own and particularly like one of Chalo with a little trusting friend, taken a month ago. I am attaching just a few of these images here. Please feel welcome to stop by with a USB key for more of them.

Species in the rookery

Six birds needed rescuing today: three are in quite poor shape, and one is the youngest chick we've seen this year. Some bird parents are in obvious denial about the season's end. Hopefully these are few. It looks like we'll have to keep an eye out for distressed birds for a while yet.

Along these lines, I am attaching to this mail a tentative flyer for posting at the garages and basketball court near the rookery. Claudia will finish it off and post it. Please contact her with any suggestions about the wording and information and let her know whether you would like your name on it and, if so, what telephone number you want next to your name. I recommend that we list two or three first names and accompanying phone numbers.

How about a lunch meeting next Wednesday or Thursday (Aug 9 or 10 at noon) to discuss what we tried, ideas that came up, and how best to proceed? If one of these times won't work for you, let me know.

I have been trying to reach the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, hoping that a friendly initial meeting (we can send him our more formal letter after that) will help build a good relationship with Physical Plant. So far we're still playing phone tag.

In case some of you are wondering about the species of birds who nest in the rookery, they include, roughly in order of abundance:

Cattle egrets

Great egrets

Little blue herons

Snowy egrets

Black-crowned night herons

Yellow-crowned night herons

White ibises

Tricolor herons

Anhingas

There might be others. These are the ones I've personally seen. Except for two snowy egrets, all the birds we've picked up this year have been the chicks of cattle egrets and great egrets. This is quite puzzling and interesting.
